Elengy launches a LNG* tanker truck loading station at its Fos Tonkin LNG terminal.
Elengy will thus enable its customers (energy suppliers) to load up their tanker trucks with liquefied natural gas before transporting it to wherever it will be used. This LNG will be used to supply industrial sites or LNG as fuel distribution stations for vehicles or ships, thus helping customers to respond, in an economical way, to new environmental requirements.
Reservations for the new service whose tariff is listed on Elengy's website (www.elengy.com) are being taken on a first committed, first served basis. Customers will need to have the LNG they need before the loading date – if necessary, they can buy it from one of the terminal's customers. The crucial step of approving tanker trucks prior to their first filling with LNG allows to ensure that operations take place under optimal safety conditions**.
With the launch of a similar station at the Montoir-de-Bretagne terminal a year ago, Elengy is helping boost – with the strategic location of the Fos Tonkin site – the use of LNG as the fuel of the future for road, marine and waterway transport fleets or as an economic and environmentally friendly fuel for industrial sites and isolated communities, in France and in Italy.
The promising market of road-transported LNG, and more generally, retail LNG, is estimated at 60 million tons per year by 2025 in the world, compared to 5 million today. Such activity would represent 13% of global LNG market by 2025. An opportunity for Elengy to develop new services to meet the demand of the market and transform its terminals into an LNG hub to supply these retail LNG and LNG as fuel markets.
* Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been liquefied by cooling it to minus 160°C. Natural gas in its liquefied form takes up 600 times less space than in its gaseous form. The transportation of natural gas in its liquid form at atmospheric pressure means tankers can ship large volumes of energy, providing an efficient and competitive means of transport with more diversified sources and supply routes, as well as access to remote gas reserves.
Road-transported LNG is LNG transported by tanker trucks and is used to supply natural gas to distribution sites for LNG as fuel or industrial sites not connected to the transmission grid.
** In September 2009, the Montoir-de-Bretagne terminal was the first industrial site in France and the first LNG terminal in the world to achieve a level 7 on DNV’s ISRS8© (International Safety Rating System). The sites of Fos Tonkin and Fos Cavaou achieved a level 7 on the ISRS8© in 2011.
