Apollon: A Collective Adventure Transforming the Montoir Terminal

Built in 1980, the Montoir-de-Bretagne terminal faced a significant challenge: undertaking a large-scale requalification program for its facilities to meet the requirements set by the Authorized Inspection Service (SIR) and the French environmental authority (DREAL). To address these challenges, Elengy launched the Apollon project.

The objective was clear: to renovate what can truly be considered the terminal's backbone, namely the entire liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport network, including pipelines, insulation systems, supports, and steel structures. The bulk of this large-scale project was completed in June.

For the first time since the terminal was commissioned, scaffolding was installed throughout the site to provide access to all the equipment concerned.

The work was organized around the major planned technical shutdowns scheduled for 2024, 2025, and 2026, as well as a series of more targeted section shutdowns implemented according to operational requirements and LNG flows needed to supply the gas network.

Safety remained the top priority throughout the project. Any intervention on LNG lines operating at -160°C required the complete removal of insulation, the shutdown of the facilities, and their gradual return to ambient temperature. Welding operations were carried out under particularly stringent procedures, including nitrogen purging and inerting of the pipelines to eliminate any risk of fire or explosion.

As a result, no major incidents were recorded during the project.

A Remarkable Human Adventure

Behind the success of Apollon lies an exceptional collective effort.

Beyond the dedicated project team, employees from every function across the terminal contributed to its delivery. Workforce management also represented a major challenge. Insulation specialists, scaffolders, pipefitters, welders, and structural steel workers were involved throughout the project.

Teams came from many different countries, including Poland, Portugal, Romania, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan.

To support this cultural and linguistic diversity, dedicated multilingual safety induction programs were developed. The goal was to ensure that every worker had a thorough understanding of the risks, site rules, and safety requirements shared by all.

Strengthening Safety, Reliability, and Performance

With Apollon, the Montoir-de-Bretagne terminal has undergone a true rejuvenation. Beyond meeting regulatory deadlines, the project has significantly strengthened the safety, reliability, and operational performance of the facility.
