Montoir Terminal: a successful operation in support of environmental performance

26 May 2026

The Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal, a facility classified for environmental protection (ICPE) and subject to authorization under the SEVESO III Directive (upper-tier threshold), was commissioned in 1980.

In order to extend the terminal’s lifespan beyond 2045, Elengy launched an ambitious redevelopment program in 2025 aimed at reducing the site’s environmental impact. As part of its environmental commitments, Elengy has set a target to reduce its direct (scope 1) and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂ and CH₄) by 60% by 2030 compared to 2019.

The renovation works carried out last April primarily aim to prepare for the installation of new LNG regasification units using seawater cascade systems (ORV), or more precisely in Montoir’s case, water from the Loire River.

To achieve this, it was necessary to decommission and dismantle the heaters supplied with water from the Loire via the SPEM power plant located next to the terminal. These heaters are particularly energy-intensive.

This technical operation was carried out by our teams through the implementation of a specific operating configuration, combining safety and environmental performance. It made it possible to avoid the emission of nearly 122 kg of CO₂ equivalent, thanks to optimized circuit management during the shutdown.

This environmental gain corresponds to the equivalent of a car journey of approximately 1,488 km.

Beyond the technical intervention, this operation illustrates the Montoir terminal’s ability to combine operational excellence, safety, and environmental performance. It also reflects the teams’ commitment to supporting the transformation of the facilities within a framework of responsible and sustainable industrial transition.
