As part of the energy transition and given the strong demand for cleaner energy, Elengy and its subsidiary Fosmax LNG, owner of the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal, have recently decided to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker loading station at the Fos Cavaou terminal.

The transport of LNG by tank truck allows the supply of industrial sites not connected to the natural gas grid as well as sites distributing LNG for land and marine fuel. By substituting for diesel, petrol or coal, natural gas and LNG provide a significant reduction in emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and a subtential elimination of emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particles, while being economically very competitive.

In order to respond to a booming market, Fosmax LNG decided to build a station on its terminal with two loading bays from the outset. With the one already in operation at the Fos Tonkin LNG terminal, this new station will triple the loading capacity of tankers at the Fos terminals. Works will start this summer for a commissioning during the first quarter 2019.

This project is key to develop and secure the various uses of retail LNG in southern France and Italy. It is part of the "Motorways of the Sea" concept defined by the European Union, which co-finances it as part of its Connecting European Facility-Transport programme (CEF-T).

Flexibility and quality of service, the advantages of the Fos LNG hub

Thanks to the two new Fos Cavaou bays, the Fos LNG terminals will significantly increase their capacity. It is an additional capacity of 40 loading slots that will be added every day as of 2019, compared to 16 currently available at the LNG terminal in Fos Tonkin. This will make the Fos terminals the LNG hub for the south of France and Italy.

The truck loading market started at Fos Tonkin in 2015 and has experienced steady growth with nearly 1,000 loads in 2016 and 2,000 in 2017.

The third LNG terminal operated by Elengy in Montoir-de-Bretagne is experiencing the same demand and increased its loading capacity by 50% by the end of 2017, to 18 loads per day, thanks to refurbishment works on the station and the optimization ofthe loading schedule.
